Zero Waste SChools Staff (2 locations)

Zero Waste Schools Part Time:

We are looking for self-motivated interns to supplement our zero waste cafeteria programs in the Brighton Central School District. In addition, staff would be scheduled to work zero waste events in the community at schools. This position requires a small amount of travel in and outside of Rochester.

We are hiring (3) part time positions for 10-15 hours/week. Start date is ASAP. Interns would be required to be available and present at schools during lunch times (generally 10:30am-2pm) daily, which varies based on the school building.

Daily tasks would include:

  • Overseeing cafeteria pilot every day during lunch periods (generally 10am-3pm)

  • Work with Impact Earth team to develop the day to day logistics for the pilot

  • Work with school district staff to collect data, organize data, and analyze data from pilot

  • Prepare zero waste cafeteria reports for the district on a monthly basis

  • Prepare and implement training materials for teachers, staff, and students

  • Attend all meetings with school district

  • Constantly figure out ways to improve the pilot, especially for expansion

  • Create/Design/Write materials (marketing, training, informative, social media) for the pilot for within the school, for parents, and for staff

  • Meet monthly with supervisor and other members of the District Team from Impact Earth

Other tasks would include:

  • Attend and help coordinate zero waste events on school district grounds

  • Work with Impact Earth team to plan and prepare for cafeteria pilot expansion

  • Go in and speak to environmental clubs and committees in the district (students and staff)

  • Work with Facilities and Kitchen management staff, as well as Administrators

Requirements:

  • Self-motivated and directed

  • Enthusiasm in the workplace

  • Travel in and outside of Rochester

  • Some availability on weekends

  • Confidence in teaching/working with students of all ages

  • Ability to work alone or with a small group of zero waste team members

  • Ability to be flexible in day to day tasks and be able to jump into new situations with enthusiasm when necessary

  • Ability to work events at school buildings and district-wide

  • Microsoft Suite, especially Excel

  • Google Drive

  • Social Media Management experience preferred

  • Some kid-experience (camp counselor, volunteer, education) would be preferred

  • Environmental/Sustainability background preferred but not necessary

Introduction

Impact Earth is a behavioral change company (B-Corp status pending) within the waste management industry. We develop, implement and distribute zero waste programs, services and products that represent our mission and values around landfill diversion, resource recovery and building sustainable communities. Our clients include counties, municipalities, K-12 school districts, businesses, non-profits, restaurants, food trucks, caterers, event planners and individuals interested in changing the culture of waste.

Overview of position

The ZW Schools Manager (SM) position is critical to the overall success of our K-12 zero waste program. The position reports to the Director of Operations. In addition to their duties and responsibilities outlined below, the SM will be required to be present and provide educational training to students everyday in one or more of the schools (elementary, middle or high school). This is a challenging but extremely rewarding position within the company as you participate in and are witness to the evolution of positive change over the course of a school year.

Statement of Work

Communications

  • Responsible for all school related communications with your District stakeholder groups and between IE staff and management.

  • Build and manage District stakeholder relationships

  • Attend school stakeholder meetings as necessary

  • Create and email weekly/monthly reports to the district

  • Collaborate with other IE school managers

Staff management/logistics

  • Oversee IE school district staff (can vary from 3-10 people)

  • Day to day coordination of staff

  • Oversee metrics collection

  • Work to implement and assess zw curriculum in the cafeteria, classroom and at after school events. These can include activities, competitions, games and/or programs developed by IE.

  • Facilitate weekly/monthly meetings with staff

  • Facilitate/collaborate on staff trainings

  • Participate in staff reviews

  • Responsible for staff budget

  • Provide leadership and/or mentorship to your staff

Legacy

  • Promote IE products and services within the community at-large

  • This position is part of the IE internal leadership team. We meet monthly. You will be exposed to all facets of the business and be a part of spreading the zero waste culture throughout the NYS Finger Lakes region.

Additional information

  • Must be available M-F from 10am-3pm during the school year. Potentially some evening and/or weekend hours for school functions (TBD).

  • Must have valid driver’s license and reliable personal transportation

  • Must have coordination/management experience

  • Having an environmental, alternative education and/or behavior change background is a benefit (but not required).

  • The position is hourly, and seasonal (school year only - September to June)

  • Pay rate is based on previous experience

  • You receive discounts on all IE products and services

  • There are opportunities within the company to pick-up additional hours in the following departments: marketing, sales, events & organics. The hourly rates for these vary depending on the assignment. Please inquire for additional details.
