“I was born and raised in upstate NY! I’m originally from the southern tier, and grew up on a dairy farm. I moved to the Rochester/Finger Lakes region for college. I completed my two Associates degrees at FLCC and got my bachelors in graphic design from RIT in 2008.”
Her background with Zero Waste
“After getting married in 2008 and purchasing our home in 2010, I started becoming more health conscious and natural minded. When we started our family in 2012, we were fully on board to becoming a sustainability minded family and welcomed our first son with a beautiful home birth. After that I’ve been slowly learning about new ways to make our home and family more sustainable!”
Heather’s Motivations to Live Sustainably
“We have two children, starting from pregnancy I was slowly learning about the things in our world and how they affect us in big and small ways. I wanted to rid our world of synthetic and toxic substances to the best of my own abilities for my unborn baby. Now, my two children are amazing to watch grow and explore the world around them. Of course this makes my husband and myself very aware of what is in their environment. I wanted to start to make a difference in my home and the community around me. To make a better future for them to grow into.”
Her Favorite Zero Waste Products
“I can’t pick! We have since potty trained our youngest but I LOVED my cloth diapers! I can’t live without vinegar (Apple Cider or white) or a good sustainable dish soap, those are my go-to cleaners! I also am addicted to composting everything I can! Right now we're enjoying the use of a bin provided by the city of Cananandaigua but we have two others that we have used and rotate when one is full.”
What Heather Likes about Living Sustainably
“Mainly we like the fact we shop WAY less for things. We don’t buy paper towels, TP , diapers, shampoo and conditioner. So that makes store trips few and far between. Less time in the store making impulse buys and less time in the car saving on gas and pollution! We can use that time for food shopping and fun family activities.”
Her Favorite Green Spaces in Rochester
“We love Canandaigua, most of the parks here are amazing! But my favorite little secret spot is a boardwalk through the FLCC swampy area across from CMAC. It's fun to go see turtles and other swamp wildlife there! The tall trees are super beautiful in the fall as well!”
